Tech Tools I Use

This page is still under construction...

What tools do I use in the FSL classroom?  I use a number of things to make sure that technology is incorporated into my lessons.

What you will find on this page:
  • Tools and hardware that I use in class
  • Notes and tips as to how I use these tools and what for
  • Ideas where you can find these tools, or substitutions you could use

iPad

I am working with an older model of iPad, the iPad 3.  It still has the old connection port (aka the 30 pin port).  I have held off getting a new iPad because I like the old format-- it is thicker and seems hardier to me. Additionally, most of the accessories, while mostly only available online now, are much cheaper than the newer versions.  Protective cases are a fraction of the cost of newer cases, and any peripherals (accessories that you plug in) are less costly.  There are limitation to using an older iPad-- there is little memory.  I have 16 GB which is big, but not so much if you load it with apps and video (as I do since I'm a language teacher.)    I get around this by using iCloud, online storage is my best friend.  Whatever app I buy is automatically saved, so I can remove and add my apps at will.  I also make sure to back up all videos and photos to my Google Drive to make sure that I have enough memory to run the programs I want to run/ use. In class I use my iPad from everything to running apps and programs that I project onto the Smart Board, to collecting assessment data on my students.  I like the interactivity of the iPad for evaluation and assessment because I can add photo and video to my assessment to review later, and to show the student after some growth has occurred.

Students also use my iPad for work purposes; some of my differentiation uses the iPad and some apps and programs I like/ make/ use.

Note:  I haven't updated to the new iOS on my iPad of iPhone yet.  I have read some reviews that are not favorable of this new operating system and the older devices.

iPhone

I'm using the iPhone 4s.  My smartphone is my smaller iPad.  It has most of the functionality of the iPad, but its also a phone ;-)  I mostly take photos, and videos on my iPhone. I like it because its handy and small, and I keep it in my pocket for quick evidence of learning collection.  I can email my photos right from my phone to my email, and download on the computer for later viewing.

iPod Touch

iPod Touch 3- I use this almost like I use my iPhone, but I have the iPod so that students can do some of the collecting for me.  I have some of my stronger (ex-French Immersion) students interview their classmates while they are working (either in group or independently) and then I use the evidence to guide my teaching. Its great because the students speak French together, and they are evaluating each other too.
